"Grab a globe, spin it, and try to find Hong Kong. It’s so small that you’ll just find the name next to a dot in the South China Sea.  Yet legend has it that the tiny administrative region boasts the highest number of Rolls Royce’s in the world per capita – no small feat for a population of 7.4 million people.  When you factor in Bentley, the number has got to be even higher. It’s surprising then that Hong Kong has never really seen a driving club dedicated exclusively to the marques. In 2023, our founder and avid Bentley owner, Darian Chui, tested this decidedly ambitious concept with the inception of the Bentley & Rolls Royce Enthusiasts Hong Kong group (BRRE).

Hong Kong is no stranger to car culture.  All the major marques and genres have their own hobbyist groups, and petrol heads can be found every Sunday on what have become the de facto parade routes to drive, see, and photograph cars. You’ll find everything from record-breaking auction gems to hot hatches darting along the twisty coastal roads. Everyone comes out for a bit of fun!  As for the traditionally chauffeur-driven genre, BRRE set out to change that by offering a platform for these cars to be self-driven to the fullest, an opportunity for owners to meet one another, and a knowledge-sharing network enabling cars to be maintained and cared for. It also helps that one of our members happens to be one of the foremost Bentley and Rolls Royce mechanics in the city at the well-renowned Autoficionado workshop!

BRRE has enjoyed a successful inaugural year. With the support of our founding members, we quickly gathered a sizeable member base. More importantly, they are all individuals who are passionate about the Roll Royce and Bentley marques. Some of them have owned their vehicles for decades, while some young men and women who are new to the brands have already developed a strong connection with their cars.  At the end of the day, nobody has any qualms about using their Rolls Royce or Bentley on public roads, no matter what model or vintage.

Our most recent drive took place on 26 August 2023. It featured post-war cars from various eras in Rolls Royce and Bentley history, among which a 1958 Silver Wraith state limousine by Hooper drew particular attention. But in truth, even the contemporary VW-produced Bentleys and last of the line Silver Spurs caught the eyes of curious bystanders as the 14-car convoy made its way from Hong Kong’s iconic Star Ferry pier in the CBD to breakfast at a seaside hotel in Aberdeen (a district which takes its name from a former UK Prime Minister - the 4th Earl of Aberdeen).

We look forward to more events in the coming future and invite any of our friends from across the pond or elsewhere in the world to join us on our drives if they ever pass through this corner of Asia.  BRRE is “for owners who like to drive it themselves”, but even as a passenger, you’ll certainly be promised a comfortable and exciting ride!

Operating a heritage Bentley & Rolls Royce workshop in Hong Kong brings various challenges. Space is a premium, most goods are imported and specialist facilities are scarce.

Luckily after co-founding Autoficionado Hong Kong back in 2021 I have had the pleasure to work closely with several suppliers that help to keep my business operating smoothly.

Having had a working relationship with Flying Spares for many years, since I was a dealer apprentice back in the UK in the early 2000's. I now rely on them heavily to keep me stocked with parts for my customers classics. I have the peace of mind that if a car needs something I do not hold in stock myself, I can have it with me within a few days if needed."
