The 10th July 2019 marks Bentley Motors' Centenary, an achievement most definitely worth celebrating. From the very first prototype created in a London mews to the phenomenally powerful and exquisitely crafted cars driven across the world today, Bentley has transformed the face of motoring.
Born in 1888 as the youngest of nine siblings, Walter Owen Bentley – though he preferred to be called W.O. – founded the company that carries his name on 10 July 1919. Now, over 100 years later, his name is known across the globe for creating cars with an unrivalled blend of performance and the finest craftsmanship and materials. Below, we take a look at the man who changed motoring forever.

The Silver Shadow was introduced in 1965 and included a Citroen-designed hydraulic braking system, running on conventional DOT3 brake fluid.
It soon became apparent that the DOT3 fluid did not provide sufficient lubricity to this new hydraulic system. Customers complained principally of squeaks and knocks in their cars, especially from the rear height control system. Other complaints included repeat brake feel/ fade, sticking pump and valve plungers, a jelly-like build up in the reservoir, fluid leaks and swelling of the rubber components in the system.

I have owned many Bentleys before moving to Australia from “Chinese eye” convertibles in my twenties through to an Azure which I sold prior to leaving California for Adelaide in 1999. I had thought to purchase a replacement when I arrived here but at 5 times the price I did not. Instead I settled into a boring period of motoring until in 2006 when I purchased a nice Bentley Eight.
