For the latest instalment in the Rolls-Royce & Bentley Driver Technical Guide series, and after a quick pitstop to profile Flying Spares’ unique approach to vehicle recycling in our last issue, we’re back to the nuts and bolts with a starter motor change on a 1984 Rolls-Royce Silver Spur.

This particular long-wheelbase version of the Silver Spirit arrived with Flying Spares just before Christmas. In eye-catching black and with a gorgeous light cream leather interior, it has beautifully crafted foldaway picnic tables in the back, plus three of the four hubcaps that were exclusive to these mid- to late-1980s Silver Spurs.

Mechanically, the car was driveable but was making a distinctive clicking noise, which reminded us that we’d yet to cover a starter motor change in this series. It’s a job we’ve been wanting to feature, especially as it’s reasonably straightforward and well within the scope of competent DIY repairers.

First, though, a few words about the replacement starter motor itself. The one we’re using is a Lucas Classic, so premium aftermarket, made right here in the UK. Impressively, it weighs about half as much as the original Lucas unit, yet it cranks faster and generates more power, while simultaneously drawing less current from the battery. Auto-electrics really have got a lot better over the last 40 years.

One great thing about starter motor replacement is, of course, that the old core often still has value. Make sure you ask the customer service team about returning your old unit to Flying Spares in part-exchange for a new or reconditioned one.

If you own a left-hand-drive Rolls-Royce or Bentley, please be aware that some late 1960s and early ’70s models were fitted with a different starter motor to their right-hand-drive counterparts. Again, if in doubt, speak to the Flying Spares customer service team.

As always, please note that these articles are intended as general guidance only. For model-specific instructions, please refer to your owner’s manual. Finally, and we can’t emphasise this enough, safety is paramount. Please use the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and dispose of waste products responsibly. Good luck… and mind your head!
