We’re back to a classic Rolls-Royce for another common but rather fiddly job: a brake pump replacement and bleed on a 1979 Silver Shadow II.
The car we used was a real beauty. A striking ‘blood red’ model in decent working condition with only minimal defects. Before you get any ideas, though, we’ve already sold it! A perfect rolling restoration, it needs some cosmetic attention (particularly to the interior) and some mechanical upgrades, which brings us to the hydraulic pump. The brake pedal was very spongy (a classic sign) and there was a leak around the pump housing, which meant replacement was the order of the day.
We always start with PPE, and gloves and goggles are a must because brake fluid is toxic and can be an irritant. You will also need a specialist tool (box spanner RH8428), which you can buy or maybe loan from Flying Spares – speak to the customer service team about that.
While it is within the scope of competent DIY repairers, even experienced technicians keep the workshop manual handy for this job. There can be additional steps for rear pumps and for models with exhaust emission control systems.
When it comes to the bleed, we’ve provided a brief synopsis; but it’s an in-depth process and a safety-critical one, so please refer to your manual and follow the guidance to the letter. Brake bleeding is very much a two-person job, and the easy bit is sitting in the driver’s seat operating the brake pedal. The other person usually does the bleeding at the caliper, while also keeping an eye on the fluid reservoir. Our best practice includes a system pressure test at the end, and we urge you to do the same.
In terms of parts, we used Flying Spares’ own premium PHC brand fluid, and the company’s Technical Services Division reconditioned the car’s original pump. Flying Spares recon’ pumps are great value and come with a three-year warranty.
